How BIG is Exchange UM Voicemail?

After Googling this one “stukkend” (my SA buddies will know what I mean), I finally resorted to making a number of calls to get down to the actual atatchment size – cross referenced that with the math and came up with the answers.

Firstly it is worthy of note that the actualy size will depend on the following three factors:

  1. the message duration
  2. the audio codec used
  3. the audio storage format

UM uses either WMA, GSM 6.10 and PCM for creating the voicemail files.
WMA is always delivered as a .wma file and the GSM and PCM is delivered as .wav

Comparing the formats.

Format

Bytes per 10 seconds

30 Second

60 seconds

Description

PCM

160,000

156 KB

937 KB

Highest Quality, largest file size

GSM

16,000

48 KB

96 KB

Widely supported

WMA

(Default)

11,000

39 KB

65 KB

Most compressed. The WMA format has a much larger header section than WAV (about 7K compared to less than 100 bytes) WMA files become smaller than GSM from 15 seconds and up.

The bottom line…
I generally use GSM since not all devices and apps support WMA. Usually I allow for approximatly 100 KB per minute of voicemail.
Now for the tricky bit, how much voicemail to cater for?
According to Forbes (and chatting to many folks over the years…) the average person gets around 2 voicemails per day. Most voicemails are around the 30 second mark in duration (or less)
Calculation is thus approximatly 1 minute of voicemail per day per user.

Using GSM, thats about 100 KB per day per user, 3 MB per month for each user and thus 36 MB per year.

Is that all? On average yes…there are exceptions, very LARGE ones as this is based on users who actually attempt to answer calls.

UM Tools – Call Statistics

07 Monday May 2012

Found an interesting item in the UM Exchange Management Console – Toolbox.

The Call Statistics gave me a good view of the activity on the UM Server

Calls per day, broken down into fields like Total, Failed and Audio quality. Each with a Hyperlink, when double clicking you get more info on the calls as below.

What is NMOS?
NMOS   The Network Mean Opinion Score (NMOS) score for the call. The NMOS score indicates how good the audio quality was on the call as a number on a scale from 1 to 5, with 5 being excellent.
Note   The maximum NMOS possible for a call depends on the audio codec being used, and NMOS may not be available for very short calls that are less than 10 seconds long.

NMOS degradation   The amount of audio degradation of the NMOS score from the top value possible for the audio codec being used. For example, if the NMOS degradation value for a call was 1.2 and the NMOS reported for the call was 3.3, the maximum NMOS score for that particular call would be 4.5 (1.2 + 3.3).

Multi Site Sharing single Exchange UM

01 Tuesday May 2012

Scenario is 2 x 2010 FE and 1 x UM server
After deploying the second Lync FE pool I found that users in new site (pool) couldn’t call voicemail. Checked the Event logs for the Lync Front End where the users in question are homed and found the following error:-

So based on this it seems that UM doesn’t know about the second lync server
Of course this sent me directly to the Exch\UM server (either will do as long as they have access to the Exchange Management Tools) for confirming, and so I saw the following:-

No Second UM IP Gateway to the second Lync FE Server…

Since the original 1:1 was created by the PS Script exchucutil.ps1, running this script on UM would find the missing pool and add it as a UM IP Gateway as below:

As seen in the image above the “missing” pool was created, albeit without the DialPlan. Running the exchucutil.ps1a second time resolves that (Go figure)
And a final check on the Exch\UM Exchange Management Tools showed that the new Gateway was nos sorted as below:-

Testing the users on the new pool was now successful.
I had simply forgotten to run the util for the second Lync Pool discovery
