Here is a quick reference of the Lync 2010 AD requirements.
The Active Directory environment where Microsoft Lync Server 2010 is installed must meet the following requirements:

  1. The AD forest where Lync 2010 is deployed must have a functional level of one of the following:
    • Windows Server 2008 R2
    • Windows Server 2008
    • Windows Server 2003 native mode (Windows Server 2003 mixed mode is NOT supported)
  2. All AD domains where Lync 2010 is deployed must have a functional level of one of the following:
    • Windows Server 2008 R2
    • Windows Server 2008
    • Windows Server 2003 native mode (Windows 2003 mixed mode is NOT supported)
  3. All Domain Controllers and Global Catalog servers in the Forest must run one of these operating systems:
    • Windows Server 2008 R2
    • Windows Server 2008
    • Windows Server 2008 Enterprise (32-bit)
    • Windows Server 2003 R2 (32-bit or 64-bit)
    • Windows Server 2003 (32-bit or 64-bit)

A quick and useful PowerShell one-liner to return information about your AD environment is:

[System.DirectoryServices.ActiveDirectory.Forest]::GetCurrentForest()

User Rights Required for Active Directory Preparation:-
